Memory Effect

Murate Art District, BHMF

Florence, Italy

The project Memory Effect, produced by MAD Murate Art District and The Recovery Plan, consists of four installations from artists Binta Diaw, Nexcyia, Bocar Niangand Lerato Shadi working at the cusp between performance, sound and installation.

Memory effect (ME) in geology is visualized as interference and anomalies in mapping and charting. It is produced by error and imperfection in relation to the equipment and technology used in collecting and charting data. This reflection shapes the exhibitions framing of the tactics and tools connected to the creation and preservation of archives and all that rests beyond their gaze and grasp.

The works are each studied for site specific approaches to installation and extend the perception of a sonic capacity to occupy space. Textiles, soil and car parts form the backdrop for a range of nuanced conversations about documentation and memory as forms of resistance. Drawing upon oral histories and evidencing un-archivable material, the project is enhanced by research displays developed by the students of the led Masters in Curatorial Practice, connected to Black Archive Alliance in dialogue with the works of the artists.

As part of IED’s Masters curatorial involvement, Hailey Conway and myself delved into the research section that worked adjacent to Binta Diaw’s Installation. Binta Diaw is an Italian based artists from Milan/Senegal, her work representative of the Senegalese Tirailleures. Our specific research aimed to analyze the Thiaroye Massacre that took place on December 1st 1944 in Thiaroye, Dakar located in French West Africa.
